The purpose of the web-site is to bring together existing and new information on digger wasps and to foster taxonomic and phylogenetic projects on this group. Digger wasps are formerly known as Sphecidae, but this is clearly a paraphyletic assemblage with respect to the bees. Digger wasps and bees combined form a well-supported monophyletic taxon, generally named Apoidea. Currently, the former "Sphecidae" are split up into four families: Heterogynaidae, Ampulicidae, Sphecidae (sensu stricto), and Crabronidae. In total, about 10,000 species are known.

This is an ongoing project, which I started in August 2010. So it is still in a preliminary experimental stage.
